Hello Sockeye families,
A few things of note from your Sunset Library:
1. All K-5 students in hybrid (in-building) learning had the option to check out library books via the Mobile Library! Readers were thrilled to see the book cart come down the hallway & to self-select new reading material.
2. The end of or school year is closing in…which means library books are due back no later than June 3 (Thursday).
a. ALL families will receive email notification of all library items currently checked out no later than this Wednesday.
b. In person learners can send library books back ANY DAY…simply have your child give library books to the classroom teacher. She/he will get the to the library.
c. Remote learners should plan to bring all library books to the last Material Distribution day on June 2.
d. Moving forward, there will be no more check-out of library books.
3. Library lessons are still happening via video. They’re posted in Clever & Seesaw. Keep watching!
4. Grade 1 students – we have ‘Breakfast with a Book’ every Wednesday at 8:40. The Zoom link to join is in my library Clever page.
5. K students – I’ve been hosting Wednesday Lunch for the last few months. Join in if you’d like to listen to a new story and play “Let’s Find Leo”, a scavenger hunt game! The Zoom link to join is on my library Clever page.
Winter/early Spring lesson update:
K/1:
We have been 100% asynchronous since late January 2021. Students wrapped up our Guessing the Geisel Award unit, learning traits that made an exceptional book for beginning readers. After reading six titles, students voted for their favorite and watched the official announcement of the award be given to SEE THE CAT: THREE STORIES ABOUT A DOG by David LaRochelle. We just completed our Wall of Fame unit, where we look at characters in books and identify notable character traits. We are using the library’s large, blue ‘Wall of Fame’ as a guide, as it showcases many memorable characters. Grown-ups, you’re also welcome to watch our lessons & see how many famous characters you know from children’s books!
Know that ALL former lessons are still available on my library Clever page. If your student wants to re-watch any read-aloud or lesson, they’re there! Simply click on “Old Library Lessons”.
2/3
We have been 100% asynchronous since late Feb 2021. We wrapped up our Mock Caldecott Unit prior to mid-winter break, where we critically analyzed the illustrations in books. Students each chose their top pick for the Caldecott, and we watched the announcement of the official award go to WE ARE WATER PROTECTORS by Carole Lindstrom, illustrated by Michelle Goade. A short 3 week unit on Fables included traits of fables as well as identifying morals, or lessons, learned. Our most recent unit was Shark Month, where we read stories about sharks and the ocean environment while examining both fiction and nonfiction resources. We’re wrapping up the year with a tasty reading adventure: we’re reading stories featuring foods and cuisine of many cultures. Yum!
4/5
We have been 100% asynchronous since late March 2021. We have worked with the essential question, ‘How do you know what you see or encounter online is real?’, which allowed us to triangulate sources and critically analyze information. When Perseverance landed on Mars, we read a book about the Curiosity rover and explored video/web resources to extend / enhance our learning. Our most recent unit focused on the Wide World of Sports, where we read stories about athletes. This unit allowed us to examine biases related to athletes – whether it be about age, gender, or physical ability. We’re wrapping up the year with a tasty reading adventure: we’re reading stories featuring foods and cuisine of many cultures. Yum!
Thank you for your continued support of libraries and literacy.
Always your librarian,
Ms Arika
