Dear Sockeye Learners,
First, the most important message: your student is missed. I hope they – and you – are well.
These last few days have seen a flurry of new online resources and virtual experiences available to families during self-isolation due to coronavirus. These are some that I’ve found to be well done, beneficial, and engaging. They’re organized into 2 sections: ONLINE LEARNING RESOURCES and VIRTUAL AUTHOR EXPERIENCES.
I will add these online resources to our Sunset Library page this week.
ONLINE LEARNING RESOURCES: these are all FREE.
Scholastic has a site with daily projects “to keep kids reading, thinking, and growing”:
Ms. Arika’s tip: These are fabulous lessons that incorporate literacy, science, research, and more. The books even have read-aloud capabilities!
Mystery Science (also known as Mystery Doug) makes Inquiry-based science fun for K-5 learners with videos & lessons, now with instant access: https://mysteryscience.com/school-closure-planning
Ms. Arika’s tip: the short videos are perfect to watch as a family…I always learn something new!
Age of Learning has 3 learning platforms that now offer free access (you’ll create a free account):

There are more online author events & resources popping up each day. Some are on this website. Others are in this Google Doc (note: I did not create it).
Moving forward, I aim to have YouTube read-alouds by ME for all Sockeyes starting next week! I’m double-checking on copyright compliance and committee requirements, but I hope to make this happen and will email when videos & related activities are ready. Links will also be in our library catalog.
I hope the above may be of help to you and your child during our time out of school. Please tell them ‘hello’ from me.
All best,
Ms. Arika
